Recommend a good Italian food book please

"A Mediterranean Feast" by Clifford A. Wright.

Excellent book. I love it. One of my favourite books on food. I say "books on food" as it's so much more than just a "cookbook".

I can, without reservation, recommend Domenica Marchetti's new book The Glorious Pasta of Italy (San Francisco: Chronicle Books, 2011). It is far more than a book about pasta. Read it and try even a few of the recipes, and you will become a far, far better Italian cook. I can't say enough about this wonderful book. Check it out.

I'd second Essentials by Marcella Hazan.  Use that book all the time.  Also this one if you like reading cookbooks like novels:

The Splendid Table by Lynne Rossetto Kasper.  She has a cooking and food show on public radio by the same name.
