I am very excited to see you here on ChefTalk! I really fell for your foods through watching Primal Grill.  Best grilling/BBQ program on TV!  I have a few questions for you, but so others may participate in each topic, I will parse them out over a couple of different threads.  

First, I am curious about who your cooking inspirations were?  Was there someone in your family or professionally that just got you excited to pursue grilling/bbq in depth?

Thank you for your kind words about "Primal Grill"! While there certainly were some good cooks in my family--my mother was actually the person who "manned" the grill in our household--I came to cooking through my fascination with history. I had the opportunity, thanks to a Thomas J.Watson Fellowship, to study medieval cooking in Europe for a year. It lead to a career I couldn't have envisioned for myself at the time, but for which I am extraordinarily grateful.

That is fascinating I did not even know such a fellowship existed to study medieval cooking. You must have some fond memories from that time.

Studying medieval cooking in Europe sounds absolutely fascinating! 

I would love to read a book written by you on this topic.

Am not sure the memories are fresh enough for that, but thank you for the idea! To me, the subject is fascinating. Glad to hear you think it is, too.

Maybe one of your episodes could be based on your memories of such an intriguing topic, no matter the fuzziness…
