White Girl wants to open a Torta restaurant in Hispanic community - need name & advice

Hey guys hello, I am a white girl been working in a Mexican restaurant for two years now. I have been cooking all my life. I am prep cook/ line-cook, I made Milanese Tortas for lunch the other day and the Chef was like dam Hueta I love it! Anyways there aren't any "Torta"  places in a 10 mile radius of my Hispanic neighborhood. I was thinking of opening a small shop/grill with some authentic salsa's and spreads like chipotle mayo etc..small simple clean..specializing in tortas..  what do you think?? Tortas by Hueta..How do you spell white girl in Spanish??

No you brought race into this. Sounds like you have a chip on your shoulder. This thread is for restaurant related issues. I wanted an opinion for something. Go somewhere else with your hatred.

From your background i assume you mean a Mexican torta which is really just another type of sandwich.  Your competition is not specifically other torta places or even sandwich places, but you are competing for the lunch rush crowd from 11am-2pm.  If your lunch is delicious, fast, reasonably priced, you will do well

What are the other lunch options in this area?  What is your average ticket price, average profit? Can you do enough covers during the lunch hours to cover costs: rent, utilities, food costs, staff.   Do the math before you buy anything ALWAYS

Chica Blanca, if you are still in LA I'd say you may want to look closer at the potential competition. I really can't imagine not being able to find a place selling tortas as within 10 miles of a Hispanic neighborhood. Maybe that was hyperbole, which is okay. but in my LA they are in every antojito place and most taco food trucks too. Don't let that stop your dream though. People will buy a good torta or cemita

Chica Blanca Torta Locos.......White girls Crazy Tortas.....don't worry about being politically correct. Are these like a upscale approach to building tortas ????? You may want to think about building torts like CMG makes burritos.......

Not participating in the spread of racial stereotypes is being politically correct? What difference does it make what race she is? Why even mention it? Would you be insulted if there were a truck named “Jew Boy’s Ramen?” Or how about “Black Chicks Soulfood Bangers and Mash?” Sounds innocent enough, right?

If the poster thinks that a white girl can’t make tortas, or be successful in a hispanic neighborhood because she’s not hispanic, then somewhere down the line racial stereotypes have been culturally engrained. She seemed to think it was a problem. That’s why she’s here, apparently. 

Curious. NPR just had an article recently about “cultural food appropriation.”  Specifically, one race cooking another’s food. Rick Bayless being an example. I don’t have an issue, but I wouldn’t want to spread racial stereotypes, especially in light of this country’s history of white, patriarchal abuse. 

And in case it matters, Torta is feminine, so it would be Chica Blanca, Tortas Locas. 

But I agree. Make great food, and people will come and eat it.

Yes thank you for responding. I just wanted to know if a place like that would do well in my community, I have to do the numbers butI think it will do well.There is no other place like that, just a bunch of taco shops.

I love Rick Bayless in fact thats how I got my inspiration. I love my Hispanic community  I was raised with Hispanics geez people stop being so sensitive, This is business.

I am outside of LA so I think it could work. Thank you

GGGEEEZZZZ, I guess your not invited for ice cream.....People were so offended they now have 3 ice cream shops......

Either way, I'd like to see how effective that business would be in N. Carolina. Or Tennessee. Or Texas.

Using and manipulating race or sexual orientation for monetary gain is slimy, IMO. You never heard Wynton Marsalis title his albums “Black Guy Plays Classical Music” or Dave Brubeck “White Jewish Guy Plays Jazz.” It’s stupid and just highlights race or sexual orientation instead of what they do. 

I know it’s supposed to be tongue and cheek, but it’s a slippery slope. Not everybody is educated enough, so the end result is bigotry and racism. Especially when institutional racism still exists.  

Intent cannot be easily determined, and decades of racial stereotypes creates Donald Trump followers, who think all Muslims are evil. The sensible thing to do is to avoid the issue entirely. 

I expect my comments to be deleted and this thread to be locked at any moment.

I'll side with those against the name idea. I don't see the point of bringing up race for any reason.

     When I eat at restaurants I want what I order to be good. Bad food can be made by anyone. If the food is good, that will speak for itself.

Use the creative name and you have placed the focus on that and not the food. Don't provide people with excuses to find fault.

They will come up with plenty on their own. I will offer that this is a good excuse to take a trip to the country of origin and see what "authentic" is. 

That should guide you more than anything else.

Good points. The only problem is that if you go to any general villiage anywhere in the world, within a 1-km radius you will find 437 different "authentic" recipes  for any given dish.

Fair enough. But I would bet the locals in Italy, whatever their regional or neighborhood specific preferences may be, do not use the green cardboard tube of salty white stuff sold in US supermarkets labeled as parmesan cheese. Every cuisine will have various versions of authentic depending on ingredient availability, personal preference, traditions, etc. But at least by visiting you know how far astray you can go before you've lost it.
