Hey guys,

Well I went to Candada fishing for a week and then after driving 14 hours back hopped in the car and drove 10 hours to Pigeon forge Tennessee to vacation with my family. Upon returning Chicago (particularly our area) had record rains and our basement flooded. We had a full 5 inches of water in the entire basement (finished) and we are now in the process of rebuilding. Sad for us since the basement was finished and the most used room in the house (tv room, office, dinning room). We have home owners insurance but it was did not cover a thing since we did not have the "Sewer backup" rider. Get this, the sewer backup add on costs more yearly than our home owners policy. Go figure.

We would of been fine but the power went out and our sump pump could not run. Of course I never went and bought the generator I kept telling myself to buy. Now we have a nice new and shiny Briggs and Stratton 5000 generator.

Anyways I am back just burnt out from all the running around and now all the work on our house. Hasn't given me much energy to post. Hope your all having  a great summer.

Sorry about your troubles Nicko.  We did get a ton of rain around here...lightening, power outages and flooding happened in a lot of areas.  Hopefully everyone is recovering now.

I also have a generator but would urge anyone who can afford an automatic generator to get one.  It hooks up to the natural gas line, going into your house, and is connected to an automatic switching panel linked directly to your electrical breaker box.  This way when the power goes off your generator automatically starts up (never needing to be refueled) and switches electrical power automatically for the circuits in your house.  It will also stop power from being fed beyond the switching panel, isolating from the breaker box.  When your electrical power resumes the generator will shut down and switch everything back.  It's a nearly seamless power transition.

I can't afford the system myself...but it's the most reliable option out there...and price's have come WAY down in the past ten years.

     hope fishing was good!

Nicko I'm sorry about your troubles.  We had something similar happen a couple of summers ago.. lucky for us our basement is unfinished but there are alot of people whose basements were finished that had big problems.  Is the city doing anything to help homeowners who were flooded?  When it happenned here the city offered a rebate to help with the costs of cleanup.

Nicko,

Really sorry to hear what happened. Nothing worse than coming back from a holiday or a break to be faced with a nightmare in your own home.

The rain has been nonstop   here too.

My parents face flooding every year because they live right near the river, when the spring comes, the water level rises every time and my parents hold their breath in the event of a possible flood. It has happened 4 times in 45 years,  the insurance paid but after the 4th  they said it would be called "an act of God". More like the insurance company saying " Don't want to pay".

Fishing in Canada eh ?

You did not mention if you caught anything....

Hope you have a good summer.

Thanks everyone. We have the carpet ripped out now and it is mostly dry. We are getting a new sump pump with a backup sump and a battery backup for both.

As for fishing... Of course I caught some.

Ontario is correct. Lake of the Woods. Go to the "White Pines Lodge" in Sioux Narrows. Jim and Jody are excellent hosts!

Nicko, as an experienced fisherman myself, I see you have mastered the "extended arms at the camera" pose /img/vbsmilies/smilies/biggrin.gif

Wow what a bummer. While I don't live in the same state I can say that the sewer back up add on is very inexpensive here. What I discovered a few years ago is that by avoiding the national big brand insurance companies can be a lot more cost effective. A few of them told me their rates were so high because they were paying so many claims in Florida and CA.

I don't know if it's an option but if you have insurance companies that primarily do business in your home state it might be an option for you in the future.
