What would you name your restaurant?

    Anyone who loves cooking I think there is always a little dream of having your own restaurant, whether that is big or small everyone has their own dreams.  My wife and I's dream is more like a retirement plan.  We want to have a little bed and breakfast or small cafe that just does breakfast and lunch and call it Hopple Popple.  The name comes from this old family recipe that is kind of like a quiche.  We would have delicious quiches, fresh pancakes, and farm fresh eggs.  The bread would be made every morning and someone could get a fresh baked buttery croissant with their hot cup of coffee.  There is just something about breakfast that is so magical.

    I will respond to you Robbie !  I have had a couple places of my own, over the years and like I posted in another thread, You need not only to reflect the items you offer but a reflection on who you are as well. My first place was a eatery combined with a bowling alley, thus "The 13th Frame" I offered typical bowling alley foods, burgers, wraps, fries, ect. My 2nd was a sandwich shoppe and french bread pizza place. Since it was all take out and home delivery, I named it "Take Home Eatery" We did fresh made breads, roasted meats  and scratch made sauces. After becoming disabled and no longer being able to stand and produce, I have operated, ToothlessBeaver Catering, BBQ, and Custom smoked Meats.  This I have owned and operated 11yrs now.  Like I stated before, the name needs to reflect what you are serving and who you are.

    Hi Robbie, My wife and I have recently achieved our goal of having our own place, it is right on our property, an industrial kitchen and a meeting come banquet room for  75 covers.  We named it Jersey Lane after the Island my wife comes from.  Our kitchen and our meeting room is built inside an old dairy barn and the drive up to our property is fetching hence our choice of name.  We are in the process of changing the name of our outside catering business as we just used our family name over the years but it does not resonate like Boston Pizza or Tim Horton's so we are in family discussion to change the name to get a better response from perspective customers.  I know that you can reach your goal all you need is to hold onto your passion and vision, it does feel good to reach the mark.

    I played with an idea given that I live in Florida and am surrounded by areas that people love to park their boats and just hang out. The goal would be to create a food truck on a pontoon.. so a food barge of sorts! I enjoy low and slow BBQ and really feel like that is a food stuff that has mass appeal and can be produced in large held batches without too much degradation. So anyone that played online video games or kept up with internet memes might recognize my choice, in big bold letters on the side would be OMG BBQ! I think this might have been the original source of the meme:

    Robbie, I personally think Hopple Popple sounds good (note that English is not my first language). However I want to bring to your attention the fact that today, you really need to think about the internet, how people are going to use the internet to search for your restaurant, your domain name, your SEO, and what other results your restaurant name will compete with in a search engine. 

    For two reasons: 

    1) So that the people who don't know your restaurant but are searching for a restaurant in your style of food or in your area can find you. 

    2) So that the people who know your restaurant can find your website (so they can access your phone number, a map or directions, your menu, make sure the restaurant is open, etc...

    For example, you can imagine how naming your restaurant "food" would be an absolutely horrible idea. But even naming it "chicken marsala" would be a pretty bad idea, because people will find all sorts of recipe. They also don't have any keywords to help... other than "chicken marsala restaurant" but even that will probably yield all the restaurants that have chicken marsala in their menu.

    Also check the domain name availability right away. hopplepopple.com is already taken, so that's a BIG minus for your business. Sure you could use hopplepopplerestaurant.com but that's a bit long, annoying to remember, etc.... 

    Anyway, hope that helps.

    That sounds like a great establishment.  I love that it is in an old dairy barn, I am sure it has some great character!

    Eastshores, I love that idea!  and I think the name is great.  What a unique idea to have a party food barge, that may be the next big thing in coastal towns!

    I think it resonates fine.  Maybe add the word "restaurant" to the actual name.  Would make a nice ad story.

    I would never be crazy enough to open up a restaurant. It's never really been a desire of mine. I actually enjoy working for someone else because it gives me the freedom to game-change anytime I want. But if I were to open up a restaurant I would call it Ajo, which means garlic in Spanish.

    I dream more of having a small upscale gourmet general store. That i would probably call Stissings.

    Love these ideas! Not sure I could say Hopple Popple after a few glasses of wine though /img/vbsmilies/smilies/lol.gif

    I have been looking into this recently. I make a lot of cakes at home and I make them because I get enjoyment out of it. However I then have to find people willing to eat them! I think people are starting to think 'oh no, more cake!'.  So I decided that if I'm making them, I may as well sell them. I am in the process of looking to have my kitchen redone and once thats happened I am going to get the council round to get my hygene certificate. Once I have that I can legally sell to the public. I have already been told my local farm shop would be willing to sell them for me, and thats just the one place I have asked. I would like to sell online too but then you have the problem of geting them to people safely etc..

    Anyway I digress! names!

    Whilst looking into all this I began thinking about a name for the company. The business advice I read said the following:

    * you need to make sure you can legally trade under that name, and that no other company uses it

    * you should make sure people can spell it - otherwise how will they find you online?

    * You should make sure it is something people will remember easily

    I fanciled:

    Bee's Kitchen

    Bee's Bakery

    Both Bee's Kitchen and Bee's Bakery are already taken /img/vbsmilies/smilies/frown.gif  I have a great logo idea and everything.

    One idea I've had in the past was to open a BBQ place called Hawg & Hen - picture a pig on a Harley with a chicken behind him.  Could be a fun logo, but I know the restaurant will never happen.  And I'm not even into motorcycles anyway.
