Depends. Generally a toaster does a more even job on bread. A toaster oven is more versatile and handles things like bagels better in many cases. But is usually less even on bread and a little more energy use. How often do you toast? How much space are you willing to commit? What's your budget.

I toast my bread usually once or twice in a week. My kitchen is very big so space is not an issue. My budget is 350. I must buy an oven for now. However, if a toaster does a better job on bread, I'm willing to increase my budget later on and buy one.

As said, a simple cheap toaster will serve you just fine for that use.

Star ultra-max. Gets the job done and lasts a lifetime. I buy the good equipment one time instead of buying the lesser brand ten times. But if you have a low budget nothing will beat a couple of four slotted toasters. Had to do it a long time ago, i bought 2 black and decker 4 slot toasters. Lasted longer than most commercial ones, just a little too slow for me
