What is a pass?

I heard the term "pass" with reference to a commercial kitchen. Does anyone know what it means?

It's the shelf set up between the line where the cooks work and the spot where the waitstaff picks up food to be delivered to the dining room. There's usually a warmer light above it to keep food hot while it waits to be picked up. Also called the pass-through or the window.

And in kitchens with a lot of Spanish-speakers, everyone ends up calling it "la ventana" -- Spanish for window.
