wet stones to sharpen knives, what are they made out of?

    I am curious, what are the wet stones made out of? I have read some people say they are clay based, what is the abrasion from? Sand?

    I am looking at buying some stones to sharpen my new knives and wanted to know what im scrubing them with.

    I have ordered a tojiro dp, should i be spending about the same amount on a sharpening stone as I did for my knife? I am looking at getting a single stone, maybe a bester 1200  .. though I would like to find something a  little higher. 2k or 3k.

    I wanted to make sure that I'm not bringing something into my home to sharpen what will cut my food with that could be potentially hazardous. If that makes any sense.

    bester 1200 is fine...the knife could certainly make use of a higher grit stone in addition to it.

    All that's happening is you're abrading. clean the knife and the stone when you're done. No invisible chemicals or vapors.
