Over the last few years, I have travelled pretty much non stop for professional as well as family related reasons ... for professional epicurean escapes which is business, 2 new grandsons, one in Switzerland and in 2009 in New Zealand, and on the negative side of the coin, a truly great personal loss, my dad ... Here are some of the special places I recall ...

    1) Paris, France:  Restaurant Spring

Chicago native Chef Daniel Rose, has been quite a globetrotter too, so Interviewing him was quite a fabulous experience.  He has won the hearts of Parisians and foreigners alike with his take on the product.

    2)  Ezcaray, La Rioja, Spain:  Restaurante El Portal

Chef Francis Paniego, a disciple of Chef Juan Mari Arzak and then, Ferrán Adriá concocts some of the most exquisite Riojano based products into a gastronomic paradise on your plate. One of the best on the Iberian Peninsula.

    3) Buenos Aires, Argentina:  Restaurante Jean Paul Bondox

Inspired by his Burgundian roots, the carte  is extraordinaire. The setting, urban contemporary.

    4) Porto Seguro, Bahia, Brazil: Pousada Estrela D´ Agua

Positioned on a long silvery white luminous beach, this intimate restaurant overlooks the infinite turquoise sea ... The north eastern coast of Brazil, provides delectable shell fish and seafood with a tropical indigenious touch.

    5) Zürich, Switzerland: Alden Splügenschloss Hotel

On the lakeside promenade, close to the Opera House, the inventive French Swiss cuisine here is splendid. The fresh oysters, lobster risotto and chocolate desserts, yes, I said, desserts in plural ( I was with 6 other people), were to die for and go to heaven.

    6) Soriso, Piemonte, Italy:  Ristorante Al Sorriso

Situated in the hill country on Lake Oria, one would have an unforgettable time with Chef Valazza, whom I had met in Toledo, Spain. The wine list is selective and well chosen, the Piemonte local products prepared here, are delectable. The white truffle pasta we had, was absolutely sinful.

    7) Venice, Italy:  Trattoria La Corte Sconta

A low keyed trattoria, called the Hidden Court Yard, translated into English, serves some of the loveliest seafood and fish on the Adriatic.

    8)  Costa Brava, Girona, Catalonia:  Mas Torrent Hotel

Positioned 10 km  from Costa Brava, the hamlet of Torrent houses a distinguished very small Relais Chateaux Hotel Spa with a gorgeous little restaurant. The rolling rolling green hills and the lovely stone farmhouse were just incredible.

    9) San Juan, Puerto Rico: Restaurante Lemongrass

This is a tiny intimate haunt with stunner island cuisine with a very subtle touch of Thai and fair prices.

    10) Mexico City D.F. :  Taquería Náos

Chef Mónica Patiño does some sensational innovative Mexican with wonderful Pacific Coast Fish and shellfish. Her seabass, corvina, was coated with 3 varieties of chili peppers. For enjoyers of piquant, this is the dish. Reasonable priced.
