The Lime Shortage

    I'm really noticing it here the past few weeks. Limes are usually 10 or sometimes even 20 for $1.00 at the Mexican and Asian Markets in my neighborhood and the past few weeks they've been $4.98 lb.

    Today at my favorite Pho place I got lemon wedges instead of lime with my soup.

    Summer drinks without lime are unthinkable--Margaritas, Moscow Mules, every other cold, colorless spirit cocktail I can think of...All the hot weather dishes I make that depend on limes...it's going to be a challenging summer.

    I purchased limes a couple weeks ago for mojito's, and they were so hard, so dry, I couldn't even squeeze them, although they looked juicy. Since I use about 2 1/2 per drink, I gave up after the first one and went to bed.

    Yep, they have been .19 ea for a couple of years at my local store, now .69 ea. Produce mgr said she was paying over $100 a cs.

    when ever I find some good ones and a good price, I slice them and then freeze them for later use (lemons too)

    I'm mean what's a G&T without limes, right?

    we started growing our own a few years ago, but even now its still not always enough. I've noticed the shortage also, but having a garden does help.

    Well, yeah, in San Diego you can grow them, sure. Here in the harsh reaches of Northern Bavaria, though,,,, ;)

    Anyway, I did live in San Diego for half a year, doing some project work for my PhD at the Scripps. God, I miss the place. Lived up in La Jolla, near UTC and worked on North Torrey Pines in an office/lab with a view out to the Pacific. Those where the times.

    Just bought some limes yesterday for the grilled chicken recipe I'm planning for tomorrow,  didn't notice the price.  We'll see how juicy they are.

    $2.98 a lb this week. That's an improvement but still steep. They had little 2# bags of Key limes for $2.98 as well. I almost bought one but they are so very tiny and I find them an utter pain to juice. I am mourning every past-its-prime lime I've ever thrown away--and hoarding the last few I bought in the days before the prices spiked.

    I just went to the market, new batch of walnut sized limes for .89ea.

    The hubs and I went to the Airline Street mercado (Houston) and everything was abundant but the price was a bit higher than years past.
    Talked to my regular citrus guy .
    He said his growers complained about all the cold snaps followed by longish warm periods that made the trees and bushes bloom.
    Then those blooms quickly shed when it got cold again.
    Caused a smaller yield thus a jump in the prices.

    One of the things I've been using during the lime shortage is lime vinegar.

    Belberry, a brand from Belgium, makes Fresh Lime Vinegar.  It comes

    in a pretty glass bottle. They also make a lot of other fun flavors like Mango and 

    Cucumber.

    Does anyone know what the reason for the hike in lime is?

    Ive heard a few stories, but am not sure which is credible.
