Survey Question. Best hot dog

A long gone butcher who made a coarse ground all beef(chuck) in a natural casing. Grilled to a slight char they were the best. I haven't been able to duplicate. Toppings? A little chopped onion and mustard or ketchup.

So, given the range of ingredients (all beef, select cuts, mixed meats, etc.) and flavorings, and casings (or there lack), I've got a question: What, exactly, is a hot dog?

Yeah, sure. It's a sausage. But that's like saying any thin slice of beef is a steak. What is it about a hot dog that differentiates it from other sausages?
