Slight eating dilemma

    First off, I always seem to have an extremely hard time deciding WHAT to eat for meals.  It just seems like there are so many options, so much to choose from...and then I dwell on it so long that I don't really want to eat anymore.  

    Secondly, I love peanut butter.  =P  This is a slight counter-argument to what I just said, but I feel as though I want to eat peanut butter and bananas (in sandwiches, oatmeal, anything) for every meal...  but I know that would be quite, quite bad for anyone.  

    Should I plan out my meals on the weekend, and then buy the ingredients necessary for them (I guess this would alleviate the crazy indecisiveness)?    Anyone have any helpful tidbits for this food boggled individual?

    FWIW, we plan out our meals for an entire week, to both eliminate that problem and to assure that we have the ingredients.

    Indeed, we do our menu planning before making our shopping list, for that very reason.

     Just a thought -

    I'm trying to analyze my own self, and I think I may have thought of a portion of the problem.  See, I live in a house where not much in the way of real food is bought (fruit, vegetables, basically anything good for you) and I have very little say in this matter.  So, I it seems to me like I am trying to get as much of this food as possible (as the other individuals in our home eat like gluttons, and then down something good for you in hopes that they negate one another...dumb right?).  

    This still leaves the real question unexplained, though.

    Do you do that for every meal?  (What's FWIW, I'm bad with acronyms.)

    Sorry, FWIW stands for For What It's Worth.

    No, we don't plan out every meal; just the main meal of the day. But the others are covered by staples that we automatically maintain, such as eggs, and cold cuts, etc.

     I think I'm driven by the fact that I know we have something, and then I will eat something else....and then think "Man I really should have eaten that instead...."

    I think most people do the one major meal a day and then the rest is reheated leftovers or snack type stuff.

    I will, OTOH, (that's on the other hand for you) wander the grocery store and buy whatever's on sale or what looks good that day.

     kuan, your post made me laugh... and I don't know why (it makes me sound really slow, the explanations, that is.... but I don't mind =) )  I know that I'm going to plan out my dinners (major meal) and then just kind of...randomize for say breakfast and lunch.... then if I want a snack, just kind of grab a piece of fruit or some veggies...

    For a long time, I planned out a menu that covered 3 meals per day, poured over the local store ads  while doing it to take advantage of loss leaders, and stuck pretty closely to the menu.  I got out of that habit and spending spiraled as did trips to the grocery store.  Now I am going to get back into it.  Not only did it help with spending but by planning ahead, I was better able to balance out what we eat nutritionally and I lost weight.  I have to get back into that habit!

    I rummage through the freezer the night before to decide on a protein then rummage through the pantry to decide what to make with it /img/vbsmilies/smilies/lol.gif I always have some stuff in the house for a salad and a carb (bread, rice, potato, etc) to go with it.

    Ah, what's for dinner?  A really uncommon question, I would surmise.  And if you believe that I've got some ocean front property in Omaha you might want to invest in....

    Some days no problem, I know exactly what I want to eat that day and just do it.  Some days I have trouble making up my mind.  I try to vary the main proteins and styles day to day. My wife often comments favorably on how I keep the menu varied.

    Some days I go to the store with an exact plan and get what I came for.  Other days I might walk in with the intention to get what I need for pasta in a sausage and mushroom cream sauce, but walk out with short ribs and broccoli.

    I do have a file that simply lists a number of the dishes I know how to prepare and on occasion will read through it looking for inspiration on those days I get stuck on 'What's for dinner'  Sometimes it works, sometimes we end up with store bought pizza.   Hmm, I haven't made pizza for a while, maybe I'll whip up a batch of dough later today.

    Yes, it can be difficult to come up with a healthy, delicious, well rounded menu every day that fits the budget.  Some days you're the dog, some days you're the hydrant.

    Ploofafa - I think the PB & B thing is just a temporary thing.  If everyone else in the house is scoffing down all the other good things, then perhaps its your body making sure it gets full.   I've got the same thing with ramen at the moment.  Can't go a day without it.  But it's happened before and it will pass.  It was a crumpet obsession before that.  Both are quick and filling foods - I don't have much time for cooking.  Except for dinner.

    For your first question, I would plan on basing your weekly menu (this is for dinner - the rest can work itself out), try 3 red meat nights, 3 white meat nights, and 1 veg only night.  You'll know what goes with each protein, and lotsa cheese on the veg night.  Endless possibilities, I am thinking you may like to follow teamfat's advice. Make a list of basic dishes you do, refer to it, but perhaps tweak it differently at times.
