Should I go for it?

    Hi everyone.

    Before I start my questions, let me do a short introduction. Currently working in Fraser place, a hotel + service apartment as a cook and studying part time in baking and pastry. I know this line is tough and long hours but I really love doing it. Used to work in a central kitchen for bread shop for a month but due to the environment there I left.. The place im working now is good I would say.. I do cooking and setting up for breakfast. And prep as well.. And ordering of stocks. Basically, everything. I only worked for less then 3 months.

    Before this I was already working as a part timer in restaurant as a server and I slowly moved to kitchen to do simple prep which I really love doing.

    I don't have much experience in kitchen though. Recently i applied a job in Fairmont and they contacted me and after the interview they actually offered me a job as a Pastry cook in one of their semi fine dining restaurant. Of cause I'm excited because it's one of my dream to work in a hotel line. But their pay that they offer me is lower then what my current job is paying me.

    Here is the question
    I don't know if I should accept this job? I would love this opportunity to work there..

    1. I think it's good for my resume profile. But my pay will be lower.
    2. I don't know what it is like over there as it will be a new environment..
    3.On the other side I like my current job as well but I don't know about career progression because the place I'm currently working used to serve only long term stay residence and only they recently accept short term stay guest as well.
    4. I'm studying in baking and pastry and Fairmont is offering me as a pastry cook..

    I've been thinking quite a lot for this few days and asking all my friends and family. They ask me to decide on my own.. I know only I have the answer but I really appreciate some advice..

    It's good to have you here.  You are right, it's a tough decision. What is more important right now, the money or the experience?  I know it's nerve racking to leave the safety of the known to strike out into the unknown.  But growth never occurs without change.  You will probably work a lot of jobs over the course of your culinary career.  Be advised that while a better job will look good on a resume, employers don't want to see ten jobs in three years, either.  It's understood that while you're a student you'll move around though.

    My gut feeling based on limited information is that I'd take the new job. But it's your call.  If you're not ready to make the move yet there's no shame in that.  You know your mind better than we do.

    Unless the job your taking won't allow you to meet your bills then I wouldn't take it. If your making enough while getting a lot of on the job training that will help you in the future then by all means take it. In a few years you will look back at this and be happy you took experience over a few dollars  more in money. In the early years of your career money can't be the driver. Experience will get you a lot more money in the future......Good luck....

    Agree with ChefBillyB here - as long as you can make ends meet with the new pay and have a little on the side then I'd take the new job as well.

    Working for one of the big guys in the hotel industry is very good on your resume and generally hotels also offer a very good career path. Plus - be sure that within 2-3 years of working there and doing a good job other hotels will come knocking.

    In terms of not wanting to leave - fully understand that. If you are comfortable where you are right now it is hard to think of leaving all this behind to venture out into the unknown.

    However - consider this - you are young and this is the best time to collect experience.

    Not trying to persuade you though, as it really comes down to you.

    Generally speaking:

    Cons:

    - new environment, new colleagues, not sure what to expect

    - less pay (as long as you will not be suffering financially, not really an issue at the beginning of one's career)

    Pros:

    - big name in the industry (Fairmont Hotels)

    - on the job experience in a well oiled machine

    - title and backing of the hotel

    I'm not very worried about the pay because the pay I'm getting now is not much difference. My actual worry is whether can I adapt to wherever I will be going because of the previous bakery job.

    Actually I'm not young anymore. 28 this year. Haha.

    Anyway mates, I've decided to accept the job. Hopefully I can achieve something.

      I really agree with Phaedrus has posted. Growth in your career involves change and risk. The Fairmont Group is a very good outfit to start with. Most properties will have a good

    instructional environment. I'm assuming you went through the Human Resources Department to attain this job. Years ago I helped work on some of the educational programs at the

    Fairmont. My only suggestion would be: I assume you will be be back at HR to do your paperwork. I would use this opportunity to speak with the representative about movement within the company.

    The programs ( which I think are still in place) are something you might want to ask if in the future some of these might be available to you. They have Educational internships to leadership programs.

    They have a Student Work Experience Program. SWEP. It's a great way to move into different positions while your employed. If you decide you  might want to further your experience, after graduation from your school you can enter their Leadership Development Program. LPD. This is a more intense program to give you the opportunity to really advance in the area you pick.

    I would just mention to HR if there are any programs like this available in the future. Your growth and experienced can sometimes be stifled if you get pigeon holed into one job for yor whole time there.

    Just a suggestion.
