I seen this in a amazon ad but never heard of it. I know there are different rices so what makes this one different?

Google "Santo Tomas Bomba Rice" and you'll get your answer in less than 1 minute.  Probably will take less time than it took to write the post asking the question.

Bomba rice is excellent, it's a short grain rice perfect for paella and risotto imo.  I like it much much more than I like arborio.

Traditional paella rice, everything the others have said: short round grain.

It isn't cheap over $10 for just 2 lbs. I have used regular Carolina, boiling bag, microwave in a bag, jasmine and bought bag of parboiled for stuff peppers but this stuff is new. I read in the reviews on amazon its mostly used for paella but why this and not parboiled? I guess long grain would not cook?

It's not new. It is traditionally used for paella. Not long grain. I don't understand the question.

If you're truly curious, try it out. What's $10 in the long run? Obviously everybody here who's used it stands by it, also there's the added plus from doing something authentic.

Because bomba tastes incredible while parboiled tastes like ^%@(. Long grain would cook, it just wouldn't absorb as much of the broth, which is where the flavor is.
