Saffron Is Almost A Bargain

    Although it's hardly been reflected at the local level, the price of saffron has been coming steadily downwards.

    I thought it was a pretty good deal, earlier this year, when I paid $99/ounce. They're now offering it for 80 bucks. This is the Iranian stuff, which many consider the best saffron in the world.

    Just thought I'd pass that on in case anyone needs to stock up.

    Up until now I've always heard that spanish saffron is the best.

    There's no way real saffron is going to be cheap. There are however many ways to tamper with saffron by adding other stuff that doesn't belong in it, especially the powdered junk. I've been to Turkey many times and you will be offered saffron at an unreal price. Looks the same, but it has almost no smell and no saffron taste at all when cooking with it. I prefer to buy the very tiny paper packages with only a few real saffron threads in it. That's all you need for a preparation.

    ChrisB - I've been offered that stuff in souks and markets from Greece to Morocco - it's always the powdered stuff, rather than the threads - and I confess that I was caught, ONCE... got it home and it turned out to be turmeric!

    Like you, I prefer to buy small amounts of Spanish saffron at a time, from a reputable dealer.

       The stuff KYH is referring to isn't cheap in quality, or price. It has gone down in price, from $99/ounce to $80/ounce, hardly the cheap stuff.

    I certainly didn't say it was cheap - I've always bought Spanish (perhaps because I'm in Europe) and will continue to do so as I know exactly what I'm getting.

     I would even add; and also beware of too suspectedly cheap red threads that look like saffron! I bought a batch in Turkey as I already mentioned. Smell= zero, taste=zero and above all, months later there were dozens of tiny bugs crawling in the glass jar in which I kept them in! The creatures had the same color as the threads...

       Ishbel, no problems at all.  I just wanted to point out KYH's supplier is known for being a reputable source of saffron, among other items.  Those of you in Europe have certainly got some nice advantages in various food products.  Congrats!
