Preserving Jello

Hey everyone. I'm wanting to make some jello shots in a large batch and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how I might go about preserving them for up to 6 months without freezing them or if they will keep that long without adding preservatives anyway. I appreciate any help.

Thanks,
DC

I'm with you, shot or no shot the thought of 6 month jello is nasty. Now I know it would disintegrate long before then, but still.
Realistically though, jello by nature just won't hold up. The gelatin will denature and the liquid will weep out. It's easy enough though, just make it within a couple of days of needing it.

Uh . . . yeah, why would you want to keep them that long?

Whatever. The answer is: you probably can't. No matter how well you wrap them, they will dry out and become like rubber. Ugh. Trust me: I grew up eating Jell-O that was forgotten in the back of the fridge for a couple of weeks, and it was close to jelly beans in consistency, but without the flavor.

Besides, the stuff is so easy to make, especially in the quick-chill version (where you use ice cubes instead of water, to speed the cooking and jelling). You can whip up a new batch and have it ready in a short time.

I have made jello shots in the kitchen quite a few times when it was slow and i can assure you they didn't last 6 hours much less 6 months. Again, why in the h*** would you make such a large batch when they take 5 minutes to make?

Peace,

Chef Mike

Maybe you can use extra sugar. The alcohol would probably be long gone though.

Put me on the list for why?! Besides, if you kept all the shot glasses in the fridge for 6 mths, the bartender would come after you.....

OK, I'll ask a more basic question...

What exactly is a jello shot and since I haven't heard of them, am I missing out on something?

A jello shot is a shot of jello with alcohol in it. A favorite of mine is lime and tequila, however there are other mixes that work well.

I guess most people put them in little plastic cups so you can squeeze the jello out. (Unless I am missing something)

Well I cant figger out why jello would need preserving. Cant think of any right minded bug which could live in the stuff..especially when it got hooch in it. Ya know seems like they found some of them jello shooters in King Tuts pyramid..and they was still ok to slurp or whutever. Seen this in the National Inquirer or NY Times..somewhere like that anyway. It the same edition where the farmer was holding up the 40 lb grasshopper and the .30-30 he used to blast it with while munching in his cornfield. I just seal em up tight in saran wrap and stick em in the walk in and forget about it.

Best thing to do is hold the vodka in one hand and package of jello in the other and empty both into your mouth at the same time. That way you're assured of freshness.

Kuan since you bring this up let me try and abbreviate a story from high school. I lived on dorm at a quaker school. One sunday night my roomate brought back a 1/5 of Tanquerey. Well what should we do with it. Mix it. Mix it with what? I know how about Gin and Juice like John Bonham drinks. Great, any juice? No, but I got some Tang. Great, that's orange. Okay what do we mix it in. I got nuthin. Why don't we just pour the tang powder (essentially jello with less gelatin) into the bottle and shake it up. Great idea! I had the great ideas, so I got the first "shot" and so the jello shooter was born, way back in 1975 in a dorm room at a quaker school in Olney, Maryland.:look: And let me tell you it was vile!!!!!!!!!!! Chunks of gealtinous, vaguely orangey, sugar cubes of pure gin.:bounce: Oh we got drunk my friends, very drunk and almost got sick!
So Kuan, maybe with vodka it would be more palatable, but I doubt it.:D
