Pregnancy foods

    So my beautiful beau is fabulously creating our third baby and is having the hardest time ever finding food she can stomach. Three a.m. the other day was bagel crostini (like sliced on a bias and toasted dry?) with charred romaine and halved grapes tossed in evoo and lemon juice and a little manchego. It was plain and weird and a little sad but one of the only things she's eaten lately. Any good ideas?

    First congratulations are in order!
    How many weeks along are yall?

    Nutrition in the first trimester is so important but sometimes you gotta take what you can get.
    If mom is healthy going into the pregnancy she should have a few stores available to get thru the worst of it and sometimes a small weight loss in the beginning is not alarming.
    Actually what she is eating doesn't look half bad at all as long as it is a few times a day and fluid intake is adequate (enuf to keep the urine pale yellow, sorry gross but true lol).

    What does her doc have to say on the subject?

    You never know what will appeal and what will induce nausea. So very hit and miss and without rhyme or reason. Sometimes they want strong flavors, other times mild mild mild. 

    My wife became very averse to mushrooms and mustard and jokes about it to this day. 

    Fruit was usually a winner. Keep it plain and simple. 

    Try some congee. I'm lazy and make it in my slow cooker.  1 cup rice, 8 cups water is the basic recipe. Let it go over night on low. Incredibly bland but you can take it a lot of different directions.  First off is garnishes.  Soy sauce, rice vinegar (I'm partial to black vinegar), sesame oil, chopped green onion, a little cooked meat or fish, or eggs (boiled or poached), or mushrooms, sriracha.

    I usually add some ginger, peppercorns and garlic to a small teaball to cook along with it and season it with some soy and rice wine for the cooking time. If you want, add some chicken thigh, or braisable bit of pork or beef and let it cook all night. Remove the aromatics and meat. Keep and shred the meat--it should just fall apart and discard the aromatics. 

    This is one of those dishes that is easy to shift from mild to bold as needed or desired. One of you can eat bland, the other intense.

    Congratulations!  This is very exciting but of course for her it must be frustrating not being able to keep anything down.  I'm not convinced there are any specific "pregnancy foods" that are different than the typical healthy diet.  Of course there are things she should stay away from like unpasteurized cheeses, undercooked meats and fish, deli meats, too much coffee etc.  But everything else is fair game.

    I became very averse to stinky cheeses when I was preggo and still have not been able to cultivate a like for them again.  I used to think that gruyere was pleasantly stinky but a wiff of it while pregnant made me ill.  Now I find it mildly annoying.

    She will eat what she likes, that's all you can do!

    @phatch reminded me.
    Ginger is great for mild nausea.
    Tea or even candy (I can only find the candy at Asian groc checkouts) work within minutes.
    Another tip for nausea is to keep saltines on bedside table and nibble one before getting out of bed.
    The trick is to not have an empty tummy.

    Must be time to volunteer at the OB clinic .....

    Lol, you guys are the best, thank you so much for all your kind words :). She's still in the first trimester and from what the first two times were like this was the hardest part, this time just seems to be exceptionally difficult.

    I've never made congee but this sounds like the perfect opportunity to learn, awesome suggestion. Saltines too, I totally forgot that was one of the only things she could eat the last couple of times. Ginger is out 'cause she refuses to eat that when she's not preggers. And I absolutely agree, tellagio would probably be a bad move
