Pomegranate Molasses - make it or buy it?

    Hey everyone - I can't find pomegranate molasses for the life of me.  Getting ready to just try to make my own.  What do you do?  BTW, I'm using this for a lamb dish, but I'd be willing to bet this tangy/sweet stuff is good for lots of things.  Ideas?

    Go ahead and make your own, but if you don't want to go to the trouble it's available from a lot of online sources. 

    If you live in or near a big city, it's readily available at "Mediterranean" (Armenian, Turkish, Lebanese, Syrian -- that kind of Mediterranean) markets.

    I find it's like ketchup; while you certainly can make your own, it's really easier to buy it.

    I get it at an Mid-Eastern grocery. But, if nothing else, it's available on-line. There are an incredible number of uses for it, both sweet and savory. I make a knock-your-socks-off barbecue sauce, for instance, based on pomegranate molasses.

    I looked at the Alton Brown recipe, and was amused, as it presumes you can find pomegranate juice. I can---but only in the same markets that carry the molasses. So there'd be nothing gained for me.

    I never had pomegranite molasses, though it sounds wonderful, but i do make my own ketchup - i can't eat the store one any more.  Try this, KY, just put some tomatoes (fresh or canned) in a pot, a couple of spoons of vinegar, a bit of ground clove or allspice, a  couple of spoons of dk brown sugar, salt, pepper, and what strikes your fancy,like thyme, basil, mustard, an onion, some garlic... boil it for long enough that the onion or whatever is cooked, then blend it. 

    Let it cool.  Try it with your next hamburger, and tell me that it's not worth making your own.

    I've also canned it, but it's fine just like that, i often start it when i take out the hamburgers.  That and home made bread and butter pickles, though if i lived where you could buy them, i'd probably buy them.  I make five jars and they're gone in five meals.

    I have made my own ketchups in the past. It's just that we don't use enough of it, day to day, to bother. Primary use is as a tomato-base for other dishes---such as barbecue sauces. So when I need some for that purpose store-bought is fine.

    I can't remember the last time I put ketchup on a burger. Yeah, yeah, I know it's the "standard" condiment. But it just doesn't appeal to me.

    Buy it! A little goes a long way, and the stuff stays good for a long time due to the high sugar content.

    I can understand.  I never put it either, till i made it myself.
