Personal chef business tips needed! :)

    Hello all :)

    I'm looking at beginning my own personal chef business I've been inquiring about it for some time now and have done quite a bit of research but I was hoping I could get some advice from other personal chefs out there! Like will this be profitable? I'm 23 and quite young in the industry but I'm not going to let that deter me FYI. Another question would be how do I go about starting this bad boy? I put flyers up and got no responses and I've also posted kijiji and Craigslist ads and i got no replies there. Is there an agency that i should go through? And any other awesome tips would be lovely!

    What's your culinary background?  Aside from graduating culinary school - which is largely meaningless as a stand alone - what's your foodservice experience?

    I have 2-3 years experience and read a lot of cookbooks and am always cooking whenever possible. As of right now I am a chocolatier but prior to that I worked in numerous kitchens I graduated a year ago perhaps longer

    I think you have to go to the people looking to hire a personal chef, meaning search classifieds instead of posting your own.  It's a specific market, there's no reason or advantage to advertise yourself to the broad public.

    As a practicing personal chef, I can attest that advertising does not work, paid or otherwise.

    One needs to define their market and then target that market.

    A potential personal chef client rarely searches any form of classified advertising. In this day and age, they probably will Google (or equivalent) something similar to personal chefs, anytown, ST use something like http://www.personalchefsearch.com/, an on-line search engine specifically for personal chefs.

    Flyers, brochures, paid ads, radio spots, etc., may feel like you are trying but all you are doing is putting money in other peoples pockets.

    You're certainly free to spin your wheels and spend your money trying to figure it out on your own.
