online school?

    I was browsing around the web today for some information on culinary schools and came across http://www.escoffieronline.com  and thought it seemed odd to have a 100% online culinary school. That said, if it actually offers a good solid education, it would work out beautifully for my current situation. It just doesn't seem to me like it would result in the same quality of education that a classroom would. If anybody here knows anything about this program can you please share your knowledge about this program? thank you very much :)

    Please do!!  I am very interested in her take on this, as I live in rural Iowa and have a kindergartner, so an online program would definitely be the most convenient.

    Surprisingly, I received a response already. This is what she said:
    it's not exactly a comparison of the two different educations but it's something. I don't know how much weight an APPCA endorsement carries.

    That's a pretty neat place, thanks! I'll have to look at that closely. I like that they have it broken down there. I like not being tied down for 2 years or whatever, for an online education :)

    Hello,

    I was looking closely at this program as well. I am a teacher, and I am considering a career change to become a private chef. My only concern is that the certification will not be looked at highly by employers when lookng to secure a private chef position. Does anyone think this is something to be concerned about? Can anyone give me advice on this?

    IMHO, cooking credentials for personal/private chefs are secondary to many other skills and are often unnecessary.

    Personal/private chefs do what grandmothers and stay at home mothers do/did, prepare tasty, home cooked family dinners.

    Having the education from Escoffier (or any other conventional or on-line school), in general, will improve your cooking skills and may boost your confidence level. Education, at least for me, is ALWAYS valuable.

    Having the certification from Escoffier (or any other culinary certification) may help you gain clients IF your client base knows and understands what the certification means /img/vbsmilies/smilies/crazy.gif, most of my client base has no idea or grasp of what the certification means. Certification, for me, is only valuable if a knowledgeable client recognizes the value to them!

    In over 12 years as a personal chef, I have never had a client or potential client as where I received my training. Some friends and acquaintances have inquired and I respond that my undergraduate training was from MHC and my graduate training was from SHK.

    If they inquire further, I explain MHC= Mama's Home Cooking and SHK=School of Hard Knocks
