The owner of my establishment had made up these coupons where if you write a positive review on one of 6 websites and bring it in you will receive 25% off your dinner. Wow how desperate it makes us look I think and actually we really don't need to look desperate as we are busy and bringing in customers just fine he is really caught up in the social media and even posts his own positive reviews. Has anyone else seen someone try to buy reviews and it actually work in their favor?

Yes, seen it; No, it did not work in their favor.  They are doing well, though, once they got past the embarrassment of being "outed" for trading food for positive reviews.  To me it seemed desperate at the time and now that they have successfully survived their start-up, the headaches associated with that fiasco seem totally un-necessary.

I know owners who glean the "Trip Advisor" reviews online , then call out those that post negative reviews in order to have them retract them.

How does he try to do that exactly? I've responded to a couple of negative reviewers explaining how we work hard for our 4 and 6 star rating and being sure to mention that if they had made their displeasure known in the restaurant, rather than on-line publicly, we would have gone to great lengths to make things righ. I also always try to entice them to give us another try and give them my name so I can personally assure they get a VIP experience. This has turned a couple of reviews into better, albeit not great, ratings. A few others made no changes. I'm curious what you mean by "call them out". I would think arguing with another's negative opinion would usually end badly. Anyone familiar with the facebook war that the owner of Pigalle in Boston had with a negative reviewer?

    Yes it does end badly....

In this situation the reviewer is called and harassed and/or shammed into removing their critique.
