Mushroom dessert crepes (TM)

    We had dinner with some friends tonight and the dessert course was a "Chopped" type challenge.  Myself and a guest were given 4 mystery ingredients that had to be used in the dessert:

    oyster mushrooms

    jicama

    rice

    apple-date-nut bars

    I made a sauté of the apples and mushrooms (salt and pepper), made crepes seasoned with some smoked brown sugar, folded the filling in the crepes.

    Made a caramel but when it was in the white stage, candied a couple of jicama sticks for next to the crepe.  When the caramel was amber, added some cream, folded in some of the rice and some finely diced apple-date bars for texture.  Spooned the caramel over the crepes.

    Was ok, considering the bizarre ingredients and I won the challenge.  The apples softened the mushroom taste to a decent degree.

    Any other ideas for these ingredients in a dessert or improvements on my idea?

    Why subject your "friends" to a dessert made of those items?!?

    Interesting assortment, cudda been worse, but definitely a challenge,
    especially with the mushrooms, not easy IMO to repurpose em from
    savory to sweet. Sounds like you pulled it off fairly well though.

    Think "Umami" and the mushrooms go quite well with the apples.

    I like the candied Jicama idea.

    Congratulations on overcoming the challenge. Sounds like you enjoyed the evening. I also think the candied jicama sounds interesting. 

    But having said that, I have to echo Iceman and ask "Why?". 

         I haven't watched too much Chopped and that kind of challenge is a big reason why not. While it may make for amusing entertainment on television, it does nothing to foster or promote ideas about the practice of good cooking.

    They love the show Chopped and usually let their 10 year old pick the ingredients.  I just got to play along this time and compete against one of the parents instead of them competing against each other with the son the judge.  We only had 30 minutes, it was tough, especially with those stupid mushrooms.
    I wouldn't get too excited about the candied jicama.  The water broke down the caramel in a few minutes.   /img/vbsmilies/smilies/mad.gif

    It was just a fun dinner party.  The other guy made a small mushroom and apple cake with rice-pear-jicama-apple pudding.  He lost because the plate concept wasn't coherent, just 2 separate items.

    I personally don't like the show and don't watch it for the same reasons you mention but all's good among friends.  I think the time constraint is worse than the ingredient restraint
