makeshift picnic ideas?

    What do you take with you when you're about to head out to the park and you haven't had time to prepare?  There's no time for frying chicken or making potato salads now.  Like literally, what do you grab on your way to the park?

    Can you stop by a store in this scenario?  A couple wedges of good cheese and a box of nice crackers, some fresh grapes, apples and oranges, A good deli for a sandwich with dressing on the side so it won't get soggy. Or a baguette with deli meats. Last nights' leftovers? 

    Butter lettuce for an impromptu salad with the fruit. A can of cashews or pistachios. A bag of potato chips. A chocolate bar or two.

    I grab whatever I have in the pantry or `fridge @Koukouvagia

    literally!

    when we're about to head out to the pool (sorry, don't mean to rub it in, we don't have a park, but a community pool /img/vbsmilies/smilies/smile.gif)

    I'll make us each a quick sandwhich, even it's just pb&j, some fruit or cut up veggies,cheese, salami, crackers, bottled water (we live in the desert, you should always have water on you at all times),  stuff I have about anyways

    When i make Swedish pancakes( think a crepe but a bit thicker) i always do extras and freeze the wraped in groups of 4 per portion. Kids can grab them and some nutella packs and head to the ocean and they are defrosted by the time they want to eat. Great kids picnic with fruit or berries and milk boxes we keep around just for those occassions. ( love tetra packs).

    For us adults its usually cheese, real butter, some baggett, fruit and a bottle of Decent french or spanish wine.

    This plus pate, liverwurst, salami, or other dry sausage, etc.

    When I come home from the market, I dice up whatever hunks of cheeses and salami I purchased, and stash in the ice box in zip-top baggies for easy anytime snacks, either at home or on the go.

    Alot of our evening snack plates that I make up with a glass of wine is just that, cheese, salami, some olives, crackers, wow, I'm getting hungry!

    Cheese, whatever fruit is in season. baguette, olives or cornichons, handful of almonds, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers and hardboiled eggs for a sandwich...or cucumber, smoked salmon and cream cheese if I have it. I usually have some kind of salad made up in the fridge, too--kale salad travels well.

    To tell the truth, I often cheat. I have a Middle Eastern grocery/bakery in my immediate neighborhood and often picnic on their hummus, baba ganouj, tabouli,stuffed grape leaves, spinach pies, etc. I also have great wine and craft beer stores within a stone's throw.

    And I thought I was the only person that says "ice box" for refrigerator.  When I was a kid we had a place up north in Michigan and we had an ice box on the back porch.  No electricity, running water, or bathroom.  It was gas lamps, hand well pump and an outhouse.  I spent some of the best years of my life up there in the woods even into my 20's.

    Ok so I picked up some fresh bread, hummus, sopressata, cucumbers and olives, jarslberg, grapes and strawberries.  This will do.

    My suggestions would have been similar to most of the above, crackers, salami, pate (I don't like raw cheese), left over quiche, olives, tin of smoked mussels, fresh bread, peanuts, pickled gherkins and onions.

    And a bottle of wine (or 2). Don't forget the corkscrew :)

    My husband and I have been doing gourmet picnics for our anniversary since the summer/weekender crowds in local restaurants in June are anything but romantic. Celebrating our 10th in a week.. We do an elaborate charcuterie and cheese selection with artisan breads, we also add stuffed peppers, olives, marinated artichokes, some pate, perhaps, and a couple of desserts like mini cheese cake, and mini fruit tarts...and Clicquot, of course.

    Wine recommendation

    Vin de Savoie

    Bring bug spray and lots of smoky citronella.

    @Mike9  just came back from my Mother's hometown in California, one of her relatives home's was just as you described, just exchange the woods for fruit orchards, this is where I get "ice box' from... they even still have that old style washing machine with the wringer, that was the "new fangled thing" they purchased, and it still works! /img/vbsmilies/smilies/lol.gif

    Oh yes it hit the spot and was a lovely lunch. I plan on doing more fancy picnics like pollopicu as the kid gets older hehe.
