Magnetic knife racks and sharpening

    So have a question. does hanging your knife on a magnetic rack make it harder to sharpen your knife later if the blade has become a bit magnetic? I personally haven't noticed any difference but I have a friend who swears it will degrade the metal and give you an edge that will never be as sharp if you hadn't hung it on a magnetic rack.Haven't done any research as I thought someone might know some metallurgy and let me know.

    personally, I think he is full of it.

    Most steel that hangs on a magnet will pick up some magnetism itself.

    In sharpening, it could be enough magnetism for the swarf to the cling to the blade perhaps and interfere with shaping of the edge.

    Never really heard anything about it as a problem, but I can imagine how it might cause inadvertent complications. I would think that wiping the blade down after each stroke would be sufficient to stop the problem but that is certainly an added hassle.
