Boy have I missed this place.

Been quite busy since my last visit/post here.  I had quit my job at Compass Group Canada only to return to them 3 months later...man was that an idiot move.  Ended up getting married, did a small reception before the end of the year, got to meet about half of my new family as they were all from out of town; the misses is a Hong Kong citizen so we've started the paper work to keep her here.  And now I just found out I'll be a father in about 8 months...confirmed by a doctor at a walk in clinic plus 4 pregnancy testers.

...boy did I ever get myself in deep here.

But I guess going back to work at my old hell hole wasn't too bad of a move, having my extended health benefits back would be of great help once it kicks back in.  Mom-in-law knows but my mom doesn't just yet since shes away on vacay till Friday...just wondering how I should break the news to her.

Also looks like I'll be selling off a lot of my junk; old DVD movies, computer games, some nick nacks I picked up during my travels, at least half my airsoft collection (yeah ain't giving that up), and donate some more of my old clothes to make room.

So...anyone got any advice for a first time father?

    HA not an option.

She is a Hong Kong citizen and only here on a visitor's visa but we've already started the paperwork for her landed immigrant status.  Means she doesn't have health coverage (OHIP) so I'll be paying out for everything.  No sleep for me, maybe do a part time job during weekends.  Was considering looking into one of those "work from home" off my computer.  Gotta do what I gotat do I guess.

    HC,

Your mother will be overjoyed to find out she will be a grandmother. The family is expanding and you all every reason to be happy. Yes, there are things to think about but you and your wife will look back in the years to come and you will feel just happiness.

I am glad to see again !

    Petals.

Welcome back!  If you're ever in Vancouver, I'll make you a chocolate cigar.

If Mom is excited about the baby, see if she can "sponsor" some time about a month or so after baby arrives.

Don't know about Ont., but here, both my bro and sis started looking for day-care before birth, one  started day-care after 6mths,  they other after 2 years.  It is expensive.

Find out from your municipality about diapers.  They get really funny about disposable diapers here--can't put them in the garbage, s'posed to scrape 'em clean and wrap them up in some kind of specialized diaperwrap-tunnel thingee.  (deleted)--stards wouldn't pick up our garbage once the garbagemen saw a pampers sticking out of the lid.  Didn't bother argueing, just took the garbage to work and tossed it in the dumpster there.

What's the big tradition in your family for the 1st b-day?  Haircut and red eggs, or ang-kueh-kueh?

We can simply toss diapers in the garbage.

I highly doubt I'll be shopping for daycare, my wife won't be working at least until she gets her landed immigrant status.  I think mom is thinking of taking early retirement in a couple years also plus I got 2 FOB aunts who don't work right now either, babysitting will be covered.

Baby's 1st month birthday is simply a big dinner almost similar to a Chinese wedding banquet but less posh but I'll have to look into whatever else we traditionally need to do.

Jebus, I haven't even thought of the little (rap factories name yet and already talking about the 1st birthday.

The misses had her first checkup yesterday.  Wasn't much of anything, they just took her weight and asked for some medical history amongst some forms I had to fill out for her.  And the doc pulled out the ultrasound machine so I got to hear the little tyke.  I now gotta book another clinic for her blood test and some scans then return in 4 weeks for the results.  It wasn't as much as I was lead to believe; I was told a down payment of $2000 was needed on the first visit with each visit costing as much as $200.  This place asked for $180 for day 1 and $40 for each visit.

I'm still looking into traveler's insurance that might help with the financial burden, need to do a bit of research on this.

And whats this I hear that I can't do any home renovations while she is pregnant?  I have a room that needs fixing up for the nursery but she claims any construction projects could cause defects in the baby...truth/false?

Do yourself and your baby a favor and get diaper service with cloth diapers with velcro diaper covers. Costs about the same as disposable diapers and better for the environment, not to mention your baby's bottom. Used it for my son and he never had diaper rash-not even once!

Talk about good kitchen smells-bathing the baby in the kitchen sink is one of the unsung joys of life! And that newborn baby-head smell is like soft heaven.

Try not to worry too much about the birth experience-concentrate on learning to be a good parent. Parenting lasts a lifetime.

Congratulations Headless-you're in for the ride of your life-equally joyful and terrifying with lots of in between.

Probably they recommend not doing renovations because of the possibility of old layers of lead-based paint and maybe asbestos stuff that might be in walls or something.
