Is 'Traditional' Timpano lined with pasta or puff pastry dough?

Greetings -

I was reading over Italian recipes, and noticed the Timpano recipe from the film "Big Night" lines the bowl with a pasta dough, while other references states the bowl is lined with puff pastry dough, or, "lined with either savory or sweet dough." Has anyone out there made there Timpano with puff pastry dough, or both doughs to compare? My impression is puff pastry would be preferable. Any inputs would be appreciated - I'm planning to make one in mid-January.

I make a Maltese dish, timpana - which is meat/macaroni in a short-crust pastry shell.
