Indoor Herb Garden

I live in a very dark apartment, and I'd like to start growing herbs under a light. I've looked a bit, and most of the hydroponic units seem more or less fine. Two questions;

1. Many use "pods" for particular seeds. Do you have to buy these or can you make up your own?

2. The models vary wildly in price, even with more or less consistent sizes. Any advice about finding a good one at a fair price?

Thanks!

I have investigated this and the one that looked the most appealing to me is this one:

I don't know if you can use any seeds but I don't see why not.

I've been a "Chia Pet" fan for as long as I can remember. They have a kit, the "Chia Herb Garden". It's got NO Chia involved. It's real herb seeds with nice little ceramic pots. Everything you need. I've been using mine for a long time. I start them off in the pots. When they outgrow them I move the pods to a window trough-type pot. Now I know you said you have a dark apartment. There's NO reason you can't do exactly the same thing though using lights. The set-up recommended by Nicko looks really cool, but the Chia Herb Garden is only $25.

Nicko:

There is a very long and detailed review of this product on Amazon. Comes up first, because 500+ have found it impressive.

In short, it seems this product is pretty cheap and flimsy, and there's a lot of gouging going on.

Obviously that's one guy's analysis, but it's very detailed. Might want to check it out before buying.

No idea how to share advice about a tabletop garden, but I just wanted to say I'm super excited to see you @ChrisLehrer  again here on ChefTalk. Most of what I've learned online came either from you Chris, or from @boar_d_laze. Thanks!
