As I was going through a Sunset magazine from July 2003 (see "drowning in magazines" string ), I came across an informational note by Linda Lau Anusasananan. You know those little stickers you find on fruits and vegetables in supermarkets that help the checkers scan for prices? Well they tell something else as well. Apparently "conventionally grown produce" uses four numbers. If the item was organically grown, there is a "9" followed by the regular four numbers. And if the produce was genetically modified, there's an "8" follwed by the four numbers. Given that genetically modified food is not usually explicitly identified in the U.S., this code could be pretty helpful.
