I believe it would be used in a deep fryer it has a long handle and the part I belive would go into the fryer Is shaped sort of like a muffin cup only its made out of wires (not Solid and a little longer than a muffin cup  ) its roughly the size of a popover only the basket is all wires

maybe to make corn or blue corn tortilla/taco shells...i use to make them to use to hold salsa, guac, sour cream for fajitas., but we were ghetto so we just used a ladle....think the big shells that you get a taco salad in if you need a visual...sounds like it's a mold for something fried that is then used as a holder for something else...just a guess....

    Wish we had a pix.

Keelenorth, how deep is it compared to it's width? If it's shallow it might be a spider or some varient of it.

The baskets used for making nests usually come in hinged pairs.

The various Hot Pot type dishes use those sorts of containers to hold food in the pot while it cooks. Usually smaller though.

Sounds to me like an individual item fry basket. Usually made in china or Japan, Can also be used for potato nest . put dry julianne in hold in place with a ladle.

It can't be a strainer but could be form of skimmer for large particles of fried foods like a small spider type skimmer. Long handle is for your safety when working with deep fat fryer.
