This might be more appropriate in the equipment or knife sections.  Spent a few hours at the Utah Arts Festival, pouring beer in one of the booths.   Afterwards wandered around, stopped at the booth of Split River Designs out of Tennessee.  They had several of these knife blocks.  VERY nice looking, this photo doesn't really do it justice:

The one I wanted was ONLY $255, about $254.37 more than I had on me at the time.

    Sigh.

I don't know, I've always been leary about magnetic knife holders...like they are just going to jump out and stab you, or give an intruder easy access when a few seconds are so crucial. /img/vbsmilies/smilies/tongue.gif it's this totally insane irrational fear I have about exposed knives.

Nifty.. I found this site while googling, it appears the prices are much more reasonable and they have a ton of types and styles. Something similar to what you pictured (design I like better) is 98.00

None of this helps poor pollop and her dark and stormy night intruder nightmares!

I've always been concerned about bashing the edge against a metal holder, the wood veneer takes care of that worry.

Please don't spend that much money on a magnetic block. These are one of the simplest things to make. :)

I think teamfat's point wasn't how good a value, but how nice.

Hate to say anything to rain on the parade, but it actually looks too easy to smash the edge of one knife on the spine of another with the particular mkb's shown.

To make a knife block that came even close to the level of the ones at the arts fest would require me to purchase a few thousand dollars worth of woodworking equipment and exotic hardwoods for the raw materials, then spend who knows how many hours learning woodworking skills, who knows how many botched attempts.  So unless a bazillion dollars falls out of the sky and land in my bank account, I'll make do with what I already have.

    But a guy can dream.

I found one that prevents the edges from ramming into one another!

After Karen's group finished their performance I took her by the booth. pointed out the item I wanted.  First thing she said was "Wow!  That's beautiful!"  Second thing was she wanted to know how it worked.  I showed her the back of one of the cheaper strips and the embedded magnets.

But, yes, I'll stick with the traditional slotted blocks for now.

I happen to share that same attitude quite often!
