A guy I work with is looking at getting a set of knives. Here is NOT a cook. He would be using these knives for home cooking only and is look spend "a couple hundred" on the set... so let's say around $200 and under. Going on a suggestion that I got from BDL I was going to suggest this set

Am I on the right track? Is there a different set I should suggest?

    Thanks

I, personally, would not second-guess or question a suggestion made by BDL.  Yes, I think you are on one of the right tracks.

A functionally superior option may be this 4 piece set:

Also a bit cheaper (CKTG sells the 3 piece rosewood for $100 but here you get a bread knife and a longer chef's).

    Leaves more room for sharpening!

    What is BDL?

I received the Victorinox for Christmas, but the  forged 8-inch chef's knife, and love it, if that helps.

Forschner by Victorinox is a great way to go, although instead of the slicer, a boning knife or bread knife might be more useful?
