They usually trim the top if it needs it, eliminating the hump. Then they sometimes turn the cake up-side-down. If you have a

small hump you can turn out the cake up-s-down to cool.

    This explains the hump.

They either trim them or invert them

If I make a layer cake of some sort I usually trim the top (and the sides if I've over baked a bit) off with a serrated knife and we snack on it over the next couple days or so.  Depending on how much trimming you have left, you could also for a couple of cake pops and decorate them or something.  Get creative with the trimmings though rather than straight up discarding them, they are good just may not be as attractive as your actual cake itself.

Next time I clean out the pantry freezer I will FedEx all of the family bday cake trimmimgs to you lol.

Useful but can be a PITA to keep up with.

Like all of the extra egg yolks from my meringue projects.

The yolks get pitched out now if not used immediately (my neighbors quit answering the door when I rang lol).

The waste makes my heart hurt (yolks not crumbs).

Think it is the thought of a baby chick being tossed down disposal.
