    Hi there!

    I'm Zak, i'm 19 years old and a commis chef from Rochford, Essex, UK

    I've just finished a year's apprenticeship at a local restaurant, was a finalist in a local "apprentice of the year" competition out of three colleges, being the top catering student, and on tuesday I fly out to france to start my new job :)

    My real passion is pastry, which i developed after working with a sous chef who's passion was pastry! So i'm hoping to follow that route!

    Hello Zak and welcome to Chef Talk. Congratulations on the recognition you've attained at a tender age! And now you're off to work in France. You're wise to see your achievements as giving you further chances to learn and perfect your professional skills. Bravo!

    How were you inspired to go into a culinary career? Was there a person- relative, friend, etc.- who gave you the impetus to take that direction?

    Besides our discussion forums we have cooking articles, cookbook and equipment reviews, wikis, photo galleries and more. The members are the wealth of this community, and I hope you profit from your visits here.

    Hi Mezzaluna!

    My grandad was a huge inspiration to me, not to come into cooking, but to do something I loved. He spent most of his life as a photographer, and travelled a lot and always jumped at the opportunity to learn!

    Yes I did have a quick look over the other forums, and I see there is a broad spectrum of users on here, who i'm sure I can not only help out, but can help me and inspire me with ideas!

    Thankyou for the warm welcome! I probably won't log on now until late october as I won't have a laptop until i get paid!
