Hi Everyone,

I have two very passionate loves, baking and medicine. I fulfilled my dream of becoming a psychiatrist, but I have also always wanted to be a pastry chef. At the liberating age of 50, I enrolled in culinary school part time at Ivy Tech Community College in Indianapolis. It has been a glorious 3 years. If I had known you could get college credit for baking cakes, I may never have gone to medical school. (Not really.)

I am about half finished with the program, but I am in no hurry to graduate. Culinary school is my baking therapy, a way to regain and hold on to my sanity after talking to mentally ill patients all day long. My self confidence has improved immensely since I began culinary school. I have accomplished things that looked to me like magic in the past, from baking perfect croissants, to producing gorgeous chocolates, to pulling rose petals out of molten sugar.

I don't know where my future will take me in baking. I can't afford to give up my day job. Whatever I do, the knowledge, skill, and discipline I have learned will always enrich my life.

Welcome to Chef Talk, finecrumb. I know you'll enjoy this site and its members, especially those who have "jumped ship" from an established career to move into a culinary one.

I should feel lucky to find out this forum and join it. Though I am not a professional chef, I really enjoy cooking, that is a great enjoy for me, in my spare time.
