Fresh ground filé powder

    Hello all,

    Has anyone got experience with self ground filé powder? I'd like to read your comments if this may be worth pursuing.

    It's easy as pie, Dan.

    First gather the sassafras leaves. It's one of the easiest trees to identify, because the leaves come in three configurations. And, when you rub one, you get a distinct aroma of root beer.

    Dry the leaves. Easiest way is to tie them in bundles and hang them, inside a brown paper bag, in an airy location, but not in direct sunlight.

    When fully dry, crush the leaves. You can do this by rubbing them between your hands, but that's a slow process. Instead, either use a mortar and pestle, or an electec spice grinder.
