First, my apologies if this post is off-topic; I looked for an FAQ or forum rules but didn't see any. If it is, let me know and I'll ask elsewhere.

Now my question: My niece is in law school but her real dream is to become a sommelier. She's taken classes since she was an undergraduate (when she has had time) and seems to have a talent for it; already my family of foodies relies on her excellent recommendations.

My question for the professionals is, what would be a good gift for an aspiring sommelier? I'm happy to spend $100 or more on the right thing. I'm imagining some sort of professional tool, though I've considered a nice decanter or corkscrews I've seen advertised that are beautifully designed, monogrammed, etc. Glasses are a possibility but a full set of good wine glasses (of the various shapes and sizes) seems a bit costly, though maybe glasses for two are a possibility. They also might be cumbersome for a student on the move.

    Many thanks in advance!

    UOTS (Uncle of the Sommelier)

what about a gift card towards more lessons?  aren't they spend on a college student budget?

I did a quick Google Search and those can cost $750 USD,

not sure where you and/or niece are, but that's some ...

Riedel-glasses and decanters are a safe bet.

    Opener for brittle corks:

Some of the smaller nez du vin sets maybe.

I would strongly suggest getting her a gift subscription to Robert Parker's newsletter at eRobertParker.com. It is the most comprehensive guide and the wine & industry standard. As somone who's hosted multiple wine dinners for Robert, I assure you that he is unquestionably the most revered wine authority in the USA if not the world. Merry Christmas:p
