File' powder??

Traditionally, it's one or the other. But I've done it before with both.

I'm wondering what's behind your question? Certainly you can use both. But traditionally you don't. You either add okra during the cooking process, or file powder at the very end of it (actually, after the dish is bowled up, cher).

You don't want to actually cook with the file, as it will turn stringy.
