Eton Mess with frozen berries

I've been roped in to cooking for a three week dinner-theatre season. I've set my heart on Eton Mess for dessert (essentially a mix-up of strawberries, crushed meringue and whipped cream) but the production runs in July which is mid-winter here in NZ so no fresh strawbs.

Most of the berries (I'll use rasps as well) will be roughly pureed but I want some decent chunks of fruit in the main body of the dessert as well as some to decorate.

I've only ever used frozen berries for coulis-type beasts - how good are they defrosted whole?
