Does the steel really make the difference?

Does the type of steel really matter as long as it hones ones blade to its users delight? What do y'all thing and what are some brands I could compare hand and hand? Do the diamond steels really make the difference or will my average non diamond infused steel do the same job? Y'all decide

"Type of steel" = honing rod? Stay away from diamond steels, they don't "hone," they sharpen- and poorly, leaving you with a rough, poorly defined edge. And, the type of steel can make a difference, depending on your knife. E.g., if you have a knife harder than your steel, the steel won't hone it & may get damaged.
Coarse, fine, smooth, ceramic, and stropping- they all have their adherants. Seems to be largely a matter of taste.
