do banana peels, orange sweet potatoes and brie skin have anything in common?

    Have you ever gotten a piece of the bottom of a banana or part of the peel that gets stuck to it in your mouth?  do you know that feeling, behind the teeth, worse than fingernails on a blackboard.  I've gotten that same feeling, though milder, occasionally with sweet potatoes (not sure if it was the very tip, or if it was going bad) and also occasionally with certain brie skin, maybe old. 

    They all feel the same to me.  it's just a curiosity but do they have something in common, and am i the only one to notice that?  It's extremely unpleasant.

    No, what you guys are talking about are physical irritants, but what i'm talking about is a kind of squeaky feel on the gums and tongue and a taste that seems common to all, or - i don;t know - it's more chemical than physical.

    Ok what you describe now reminds me of a reaction me and my wife both have with pineapple, I'm not sure if it is just us two or if this is common. I love fresh pineapple and could eat loads of it however if I eat too much (say more than four or five thick slices) then the tip of my tongue starts to lose sensitivity. It's a really uncomfortable feeling. Almost as if I had burned my tongue - but without the heat that comes with a typical burn. 

    As I'm typing this I remember that some fruits have enzymes that tend to "digest" meat, for example kiwi, papaya ... and pineapple! So I wonder if eating pineapple maybe means the enzyme start to eat/digest the meat my tongue is made of? 

    Anyway that's a chemical irritant for me. 

    But bananas, sweet potatoes, and/or brie "skin" have never had any such effects on me.

    It kind of souds like a reaction to tannin which can be found on both bananas and sweet potatoes but not on brie rind, however brie does bring out the tannins in wine so maybe it correlates somehow.

    Interesting Cheflayne.  That makes sense.  I believe the brie may have gone bad, and a bit of the outer crust had possibly taken on another mold, or else i had it with something that had tannin in it, though probably not wine since i'm not crazy about wine.

    I don't even eat raspberries or blackberries exactly for this reason.

    I don't know about the sweet potatoes or brie but that weird feeling from the banana "strings" is from tannins. The tannins also give a similar mouth-feel to wine, especially red, because they are also in grape skins. You get the same sortof "dry"-ish feeling in your mouth when you chew a grape, esp the skin. No clue if sweet potatoes or brie have them, but that's whats in the banana strings.

    Siduri, I had the EXACT reaction you detailed the other day: at the grocery store, my son grabs a banana, and opens it and he looked all excited at the idea of eating it, but when he brought it to his mouth he immediately decided to put it down. So I grabbed the banana thinking I was going to eat it myself. And as soon as the banana made contact with my tongue I had that repulsive feeling, I wanted to just wash my tongue or something. It was really uncomfortable. I don't think I've ever noticed the feeling before.. I probably have had it before, I just didn't really pay attention and probably though "Ok it's not ripe". 

    But since you talked about it I remembered that thread. Oh yeah and the banana was really not ripe. It was half green half yellow and needed 3-4 more days before being good.

    Yes and no....sometimes....depends.....when I enjoy brie the old-fashioned way with apples, grapes, crackers, bread and honey then no. When i simply warm it in the oven, again no. When I whip it for a terrine or to use in a soup I remove the entire rind. When I wrap it in puff pastry aside from cutting it in half horizontally and spreading with preserves, I also cut off the top rind before spreading with more preserves and wrapping.

    I thought it was meant to be eaten.  I don;t like the rind of taleggio, and remove it.  But sometimes when brie is old the rind has that weird feel in the mouth, like banana peels
