I just got demoted from Sous Chef back to Chef De Partie today. I have only been Sous chef for a couple of months and was on a big learning curve. The new Chef De Partie who started last week just happens to be the head Chefs mate and former sous chef from his old job. Fair enough i made a couple of mistakes the other night but i've now been told i'm not ready for Sous chefs position but that i'm the most enthusiastic young chef that he has ever seen. I feel gutted now as i feel its just a case of "Jobs for the boys" with head chef giving the sous job to his mate. It now means i'll be down a pay grade again aswell.

Anyone else be in this situation before?

It may feel bad, but it sounds like you will be nurtured.

    Focus on the good.

I mean, look at that quote.  You pretty much advised yourself.

If you're on a big learning curve, you can still be on it as an observer.

    Sucks about the pay, though.

The good ol boys network is normal. You have to develop yours so it works to your advantage next time.

You had a good learning experience though, and a good subject to talk about on interviews if you approach it right.

Never had a similar thing happen with me, whenever things had gotten bad enough for a demotion was even be on the table, I'd have already left on my own accord. Not really a good habit I suppose. Several times when accepting a job offer I've found that what I'd been offered ie pay, station, schedule, etc, got changed when I showed up for my first day.
