Crustless Bread?? What's the big deal?

Hey guys,

Just read in my Bakery Online newsletter that Sara Lee's coming out with a new Crustless Bread that will be in our supermarkets soon. Does anyone care if their bread has a crust or not? Might be a good idea for the mom who's kids don't like a crust on their bread but I don't see the rest of the public going bonkers over the stuff. How is this supposed to make them a profit?

Anything that seems like a convenience might find a niche. I think it's a sign of unbelieveable finickyness (how in the heck would YOU spell that??). I could see this selling in upscale markets where people will buy anything that's new, no matter the price.

I can see it maybe for people who plan on serving finger sandwiches and are too lazy to cut the crust off themselves. Or they have no use for the crust, so buying bread with crust would perhaps be more wasteful. These are most likely the same people who would buy bread crumbs and croutons.

You have a point Mezz. Just look at all the convenience food that has appears on shelves lately. Cereal box with a small container of milk, breakfast bowl,cereal and milk bar?!! Are people too lazy to assemble breakfast themselve??

What about all those meals in a bag from Weight Watchers and others that are supposed to be "nutritional" microwave dinners? Like the chicken broccoli stir fry. Just open bag, pour into microwave dish, microwave and eat. Don't wanna eat it all at once? The bag is .......ta ta da da! Resealable.

It won't be long before all we have to do is eat a tablet for a meal.

Sounds to me like it's just a gimmick. An attention getter that won't get much attention and will probably disappear within a year. IMHO

Oh, sorry, but I disagree with a lot of you. I think that if as big an outfit as SL is coming out with it, they've done PLENTY of market research and are quite sure it will sell well. Just think: less work for Mother (with apologies to Horn & Hardart) -- no more having to cut off the crusts for the picky little eaters, no more "waste." I only hope that the bread will have decent ingredients and good flavor. My fear, though, is that it will be like Wonderbread.

Ever heard of The Museum Of Regrettable Food?


Where you can find one example of most, if not all, food item that failed miserably on the market. The shelves are full!


You can do all the market research you want, a idea that sounds good on paper doesn't necessarily translate into a quality product.

Seriously, sounds like this would be great served with those peanut-butter and jam slice things. Yummers.

Gah. Why do marketers even bother making food any more? Wouldn't it be faster and easier just to have everyone implanted with a permanent IV, and sell Insta-Packs of straight-to-the-blood nutrients that you'd just slap on? None of that inconvenient chewing or swallowing.

The incredible, sluglike, repulsive laziness that seems to be becoming the hallmark of our culture continues to astound and disgust me.
