cooking for a profession

    I think this should be posted in another section but I am not sure where.

    I am considering attending FCI soon and I wanted to know the average starting salary of someone who graduated culinary school and starts working in NY. I have heard from people online that starting is 19k but it goes higher with time. Then I read online that in ny its 16,000 but i think that cannot be true cause youd never be able to survive. So I just wanted to know before I sign up for an education that will leave me in debt that when I finish will I be able to take care of myself at least?

    Right.

    Now.

    Go out and get yourself a job in a restauarnt.  Any job, any restaurant.  This means washing dishes or plating salads--or both.

    See if you like it. 

    If you don't, that's o.k., it didn't cost you one dime.

    If you have 0 kitchen experience before entering a culinary school, you will have 0 kitchen experience graduating culinary school---unless you pick up a job during school in a real ktichen.  It is this experience that prospective employers will look at

    Cooking isn't typically an industry that people enter to make the big bucks, although some people do just fine. If you don't love to cook, don't do it just for the money. It won't be worth it.

    If you do love cooking, follow your instincts, go to school, and learn to do what you love. Practical experience helps a great deal, but lots of people get hired immediately after graduating culinary school, where you will have done some practical restaurant work, and hopefully made some contacts.

    Read and heed Food Pumps advise. If you go to scool in particular FCI you will pay THOUSANDS to graduate and make $12.50 AN HOUR. Experience is best gained on the job.

    From your post, I am "deducing" that you have never worked in a kitchen before.  It really is imperative that you try out the job first before you invest thousands of dollars--and I don't know how this would be financed.

    If you take the time to read the posts of hundreds of other people in your exact situation (culinary students section) you will find out very quickly that a large portion of them do not like the atnmosphere of a commercial kitchen after graduating.  If you look at the class action lawsuite (40 milllion worth) brought against a chain of 16 culinary schools in California, you will find the exact same comments and attitudes from the ex-students.

    Please invest your money and time wisely
