cookbook question

    How do I go about getting a cookbook published. I have all my recipes organized and pictures of everything.

    Hi

    I am in the proceed of doing a Cookbook

    .They are not my recipes ,They are new and old recipes

    I know i have to get permission to use someone else recipes

    But i am having trouble findng the right owner of a lot of my recipe ,I am putting in my Cook Book

    What are the laws on using someone else recipes

    The recipe will say whos recipe they are in most case,Is that all i have to do

    Looking for some help in this issue

    You could self publish, either in the form of a book or an ebook. HOWEVER, be very VERY careful on what you publish and make sure if they are not your very own recipes that you seek full legal approval from the owners. Copyright law is not to be messed with.

    You can't actually "copyright" a recipe. "Copyright" refers specifically to "authorship" or, as the copyright office puts it "substantial literary expression."  Lists of ingredients or formulas are not protected. Neither are "processes or procedures." A previously written description or explanation of how to use a list of ingredients could be protected but if you are the first to actually write that recipe down you are the holder of the copyrights to that piece of writing, not to the recipe itself.

    Aunt Mary's potato salad isn't protected.  it is the written description or explanation that is protected. To be copyrighted, a "copy" has to exist in "fixed tangible form," ie: it must be written down or otherwise documented--recorded, for example.

    The ethics of taking someone else's recipe without their explicit consent and publishing without due credit it as your own is another issue.

    To get your manuscript looked at by a mainstream publisher, you should probably query literary agents who handle cookbooks and see if you can find one who will take you on. An agent will have some idea of what editors are looking for at each publishing house.

    There is a Writer's Digest Guide to Literary Agents published every year, which includes listings of agents as well as tips on how to write query letters and advice on the actual process of making submissions. You can order the book from Amazon or see if your library has a copy.

    The Writer's Digest Website has some information on literary agents but is not long on how to actually go about the process of submitting a manuscript, since each agent has his or her own submission guidelines.

    well just to let you know there are no rights to recipes you don't need permission to use someone else s recipes i have done a lot of research on this subject and the only thing you need to be careful of if you use someone else s recipes is as long as you don't use there directions word for word your fine but it into your own words and you will be fine. the recipes themselves cant be copyrighted.also you could always change it up a tiny bit that's what i do to ad my own flair to the recipe
