Blueberry Crumble Pie - sub white flour for something else?

    Hi

    Forget about the crust; I am talking about the  crumb topping. It calls for white flour - is there another flour that will work here? I have subbed white flour with brown rice flour when frying meatballs, and that has worked out nicely. But for a pie? Any other suggestions?

    You can use another flour if you want for the struesel topping. Whole wheat, fine corn, spelt, amaranth, and of these will work.

    Did you make your own pie crust? What flour did you use for that? You can use the same flour for the topping.

    No - will try and find a gluten-free pie crust.

    Will try the corn, spelt, amaranth flours.

    Not so educated when GF is the subject but oatmeal (old fashioned whole) makes a mighty fine topping for a fruit cobbler or pie.
    Esp when you toss a handful of chopped nuts into the mix.

    ... and not to speak for Mimi, but "mighty fine" means "the best" to many people. I'm one of those people.

    I made gluten free pies (apple streusel and lemon meringue) for Thanksgiving last year as my daughter is now gluten free (for medical reasons). I simply subbed out gf flour for regular flour in both the crust and the topping and it came out beautifully! The addition of a little oatmeal would have been delicious, too (no nuts for her, either).

    You can sub just about anything.
    WW flour...old fashioned whole oats (sometimes with a handful of nuts tossed in)
    The ratios may change but this is where cooking becomes an art.
    You may want to add a bit of flour to lighten it up (this is where the nuts come into the mix) or use something completely different.
    Play around and have some fun and you may just come up with a combo that has everyone asking what you did.
    Of course you will not tell......:

    Blueberry and lemon go great together......
    Classic profile that makes me want to grate a tiny bit of fresh lemon peel.
