Here are but a few of my choices:

    Cassoulet
Mac & Cheese (homemade not boxed!!)
Strawberry Shortcake (made with freshly picked strawberries)
    Buttered Popcorn
Any dry-aged, wood-grilled Steak (especially a Sirloin or NY)
Pizza (sorry but it is truly one of my faves!!)
Tamales (filled with just about anything)
Herb Roasted Chicken with Sage Stuffing
    Brandade

These are but a few of the wonderful foods the world has to offer. Of course I could go on and on. I could also echo many of the foods that have already been stated.

    lox

    I'm hungry just reading everything...

I think I wasn't clear enough in my question, please excuse my confusion. On some days it's harder for me to think in English. I'll try again....

Each country have their own cuisine and specialties. Dishes that are known the world over. For example Spain is known for its tapas and paella. Italy gave the world pizza and ragu sauce. In India you find curry, etc.

Thinking of the dishes you find all over the world, which one would you choose to put on your top ten list?

I stand by my list! :p

I was thinking of dishes one could make almost anywhere, with ingredients many people could afford- even if only for a special occasion. Simple preparation techniques would be needed, and simple equipment.

Pongi you are absolutly correct, there has to be a separate list for dessert!!

    Tarte Tatin
    Dobos torte
    Almond and pear tart
    Blueberry pie

I'll have to think about the others, there is not enough chocolate on my list, something is wrong with this picture! ;)

Why are people apologizing for listing pizza??? The question was "a list of the best dishes the world has to offer" -- not the best "Haute Cuisine." A good pizza is one of the best foods one can eat. Period. Everyone in the world (by now) loves pizza. Pizza is great food! :D :D :D

    hi isa
    great idea... here goes,

    wild mushrooms on toast
    duck noodle soup
    cornish crab salad
    moules et frites
    chicken dhansak
    ribs & chicken
    roast beef & yorkshire pudding
    cassoulet
    pasta pasta pasta
    french onion soup
    cheese

suddenly very hungry.... off for snack.... has anyone seen the japanese film tampopo about the search for the perfect noodle,
apart from being hilarious its the greatest hunger builder ever.
i sat through 90mins of it & my stomach was rumbling after 10
fortunately i was in londons chinatown & practically ran to the
wong kei restaurant ( anyone been to the worlds rudest restaurant its great ) & had a huge duck noodle soup.

    regards
