BBQ Sauce help

I have a go to bbq sauce recipe that uses chopped chipotles in adobo sauce to add a nice smoky flavor.  Of course, it also adds a fair amount of spice.  How do I get that same chipotle/adobo flavor without the spice?  I can tell you that liquid smoke doesn't do it, knorr chipotle powder cubes don't do it (and I was so excited when I found those at the supermarket), and straight adobo sauce doesn't do it.  Anyone have any thoughts??  Thanks!

Use whole chipotles, that way you can cut them in half and scrape out the seeds and membranes(that is where the most heat is) before chopping them.

Try to find dried, whole, unsauced chipotles in your area. Steep in hot water until soft enough to work on them as Chef Layne suggested.

Or perhaps substitute some smoked Spanish paprika in place of the chiles.

I'm a bit confused. You want to incorporate an ingredient whose whole purpose is to add spiciness, but you don't want the spiciness.

Perhaps chipotles in adobo are the wrong choice from the get go?

If all you're looking for from it is a smokey flavor, try fire-roasting and smoking all your other ingredients.
