Banoffee Pie

I made a banoffee pie and I don’t know why the toffee did not set. I boiled 2 cans of condensed milk for 4 hours and let it cool, then I assembled the pie and chilled. When I sliced the pie it was runny. What can I do to avoid this?

Are you using real condensed milk? As in those with only milk and sugar as the ingredients?

Some cheaper condensed milk is made with powdered milk and oil, and won't set properly.

Was the milk within the freshness date? Has this recipe worked before?
Four hours boiling? I guess you were using the traditional unopened milk can version.
For zero risk of exploding cans, take a look at this recipe from Carnation.
Good luck!
