Baked sweet potatoes stuffed with canned water-tuna

    Imagine this dish. A baked sweet potato with the core scooped out and replaced with water-packed-canned-tuna. How does it sound to you? Does it make you salivate? 

    Not me. I just read that recipe in a magazine and was literally wondering: "WTF are they thinking?" If I'm not always good at thinking of exotic combinations that work well, I feel like I'm good at pointing at combinations that just... don't work. 

    So on that one, I was wondering: is it just me? Or would you agree that a baked sweet potato stuffed with canned tuna just.... doesn't work?

    There are certain magazines I won't buy because that reaction happens too frequently. That recipe doesn't sound appetizing at all.

    Reminds me of the old lady on "The Vicar of Dibley'', a BBC show who was always coming up with weird concoctions but thought she was being innovative.  

    I'd be willing to bet whoever wrote that recipe never actually ate it.

    I agree it sounds like something Letitia from "Vicar of Dibley" would make. She would probably serve it with toast and her homemade radish jelly and for dessert- chocolate/liver cake.

    I can't say why it doesn't work for me. Sweet potato with bacon is lovely. And tuna is complimented by sweet and spicy sauces. But the thought of the two together makes me shudder. And the texture, ew no.

    I think the watermelon, bleu cheese, onion, mint salad sounds awful too. but I see that recipe around a lot.

    Oh my.  I only opened this thread to see if this was real, and still didn't believe it until i saw the picture.  The thought of the smell of that combination is going to haunt me..

    The dish would not appeal to me and my taste.  However, I am born and raised in another country.  The copy and paste of the recipe, pics & reviews (probably a violation of copyright), shows that the recipe was well received/got a high rating.  Good photography though.

    It does not appeal to me and I was about to defriend you when I initially thought you were posting this as if it was a good idea. Then again I find sweet potatoes extremely difficult to pair with any food, I know people love them and I do too but they have such a distinctive flavor! Regular potatoes are conducive to many flavoring like a blank canvas but sweet potatoes are a busy flavor all on their own. With fish? No! But I used to live in a world where cheese and fruit was anathema and I came around on the quick. Feta and watermelon salad with mint? Exquisite, and let all the other Greeks run for the hills I don't care.

    It's funny but sometimes with a steak dinner my husband wants a baked sweet potato with cinammon. I find the taste of steak coupled with the smell of cinnamon to be revolting and I move as far away from it as I can.

    If that was what i had to work with for a meal then i think there are a few ways you could marry them successfully. Those sorts of African and Indian curry flavors could pull off the marriage. Cumin, coriander, fenugreek, light on the cinnamon and clove. Maybe some coconut milk a little hot chile, lime and cilantro.

    I was thinking along the same lines as @phatch but I was leaning more Caribbean with it. Sweet potato and plantain hash spiced up with some peppers served with fresh snapper. Cilantro cream and some roasted tomato vinaigrette?
