Astromomical veg prices!

I saw ordinary, non-organic cauliflower priced at $9.95 each at a Vancouver market on the weekend. I know the Canadian dollar's down, but that's a crazy price! Even celery was high - I bought a bunch for $5.95. Haven't seen prices like that before. The local indo-Canadian market had cauliflower for a bit less, but they were sold out.

Are these crazy prices just a local thing?

Most likely.... I see some pretty crazy prices here in SoCal but cauliflower is never more than $4 a head, and that's for a very large size organic head of cauliflower on the farmer's market. Celery is $2 a bunch, I may have seen it at $3 a bunch once or twice, but again organic at the farmer's market. And those are US $.

Good to know it's not widespread.  I can live without cauliflower! Glad I'm not a restaurant that has them on the menu...

Lots of non-organic, very affordable vegetables--beets, sweet potatoes, greens of all kinds, here in Chicago right now but I am getting very tired of apples, pears, and citrus being the only fruits under $2.00/lb. Apples are starting to get that "been in storage too long" mushroom-y flavor, too.

Due to a very large Mexican population, mostly hailing from Michoacan--which is Mexico's highest vegetable-producing state, trade is very brisk. We also always have very inexpensive tomatillos and various chilis.

Here, in Wisconsin, last week, cauliflower was over $6 a head, this week it is down, considerably at $3.50 a head, cheaper with frequent shopper card.  I expect it will come down further soon.  Also, I just paid $59.00 for a case of celery (wholesale-at my job).  That's the highest I've ever seen it.

$6 US for cauliflower is a lot!   Good it went down in Wisconsin, hope it does the same here. Local root veg, squash and apples are still ok. Oldish apples are .59/pound Canadian. Got some small oranges at .79.  My friend who does catering shops at the Costco across the border.
